Ray Ban is a high end manufacturer of sunglasses, founded in 1937 by Bausch and Lomb a well known contact lens company. Ray Ban also now makes optical prescription glasses and is one of the best-selling designer brands of sunglasses in the world.

Ray Bans were introduced for the United States Army Air Corps as a result of a complaint experienced by one of their lieutenants. A few years before 1937, Lieutenant John McGeady returned from a balloon flying exercise and complained that the sun had damaged his eyes. He contacted Bausch and Lomb asking them to create a device that would provide protection whilst also looking elegant.

Bausch and Lomb took out the patent which consisted of an extremely light frame weighing just 150 grams which was gold plated and contained green spectacle lenses made of mineral glass to filter out infrared and ultraviolet radiation which can be very harmful. This was a pioneering moment for army pilots who adopted these sunglasses and the Aviator Sunglasses were born.
