With the 2015 Formula One season under way, it’s a fact that designer sunglasses are a prerequisite in the F1 paddock both to look stylish and to protect the eyesight. In a sport that expresses so much energy and excitement, designerglasses.co.uk have taken a quick look at some of the most fashionable drivers and their chosen eyewear.
Ever the smooth operator, as is reflected in his driving style, Jenson Button oozes cool in Ray-Ban Aviators. The Aviator style is a favourite amongst many drivers.
Lewis Hamilton, the current world champion, is an aficionado of high end designer eyewear from Gucci, Prada, Tom Ford and Bvlgari as well as occasionally being seen wearing Oakley.
Oakley is somewhat of a mainstay amongst Formula One drivers and is favoured by the ‘Iceman’ Kimi Raikkonen and 4 times world champion Sebastian Vettel.
Fernando Alonso is another Oakley ambassador having been part of the ‘Change Perspective/Beyond Reason’ campaign wearing Oakley Garage Rock. He is also often seen in that other timeless classic, the Ray-Ban Aviator.
Many drivers have personal sponsors and are contracted to promote a particular brand (Red Bull Racing even launched their own brand of sunglasses!) but some are fortunate enough to have a special edition made just for them. Tag Heuer teamed up with Kimi Raikkonen a number of seasons ago to create a special edition line for their Avant-Garde Eyewear collection. Constructed with a titanium alloy frame and shock resistant, scratch resistant polycarbonate lenses, the ‘Speedway’ range was originally offered as a limited edition.
Tag Heuer released another pair of limited edition sunglasses in 2014 in tribute to one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time; the ‘Ayrton Senna’ edition was created to celebrate the life of the triple Formula One world champion, who was tragically killed in an accident at the San Marino Grand Prix on May 1st 1994.
For 2015, Oakley have partnered with Scuderia Ferrari to create a collection which celebrates the joint passion of both parties for performance and technical innovation.
Whether worn by the drivers themselves or as special editions inspired by motor racing and a passion for speed, designer sunglasses will clearly be an integral part of fashion and function in Formula One. If not on the track, then during the press conferences and interviews afterwards, drivers and teams continue to compete for the most fashionable look.
